Color— Caste— Denomination— (2022)
SSSSAAAA, a cappella
Text: Emily Dickinson (1830–1886)
Using aleatoric techniques and rich, sublime harmonies, this work is both radically modern and intimately familiar. Just as Dickinson's (c. 1864) text transcends typical poetic devices and conventions, this work for 8-part women's chorus blends the unexpected with the classic to seamlessly illustrate her message: the frivolity of society's insistence on classifications like race and religion under the great, equalizing eye of Death.
